On Friday night, North Montgomery and Southmont will face off on the gridiron for the 49th time. The Chargers lead the overall series 34-15.
North Montgomery enters the game 1-1, following a 19-7 home victory over Hamilton Heights last week. The Chargers lost 28-12, week one at North Putnam. Southmont is 0-2, following a 13-7 loss at Fountain Central, and 48-42 loss at home against North Putnam.
After losing three of its top running backs from a season ago, several new faces have stepped up in the backfield for the Mounties. Cameron Giles has racked up 187 yards on the ground, while Hunter Chadwick has 93 yards and three touchdowns. Chadwick has thrown for 234 yards and two touchdowns.
Bryce Claycomb and first-year starting quarterback Jaren Bradford have been a two-man wrecking crew for the Chargers in the backfield. Claycomb has 88 rushing yards, while Bradford has added 80. Bradford has also thrown for 89 yards. Daniel Fritzen has already accumulated 38 tackles for the Chargers on defense.
Southmont won the matchup last season 34-20, have won two straight against the Chargers, and have won five of the last eight in the rivalry.
Friday night should present another great county matchup, with both teams hoping to kickstart their conference portion of the season.
Crawfordsville will host Western Boone Friday night, searching for their first win since defeating Southmont 21-13 in 2016. The Athenians also defeated the Stars in 2016, 28-27. The matchup is the 39th meeting between the two teams, and Western Boone leads the overall series 20-18.
The Athenians enter the game 0-2, after falling to Greencastle 9-0 and to West Vigo 31-7. The Stars are 2-0, following wins over Sheridan 50-12, and Lafayette Harrison 26-0.
